Youth culture in the 1990’s was taken by surprise when a new style of rock music exploded into popularity. Teenagers were able to identify themselves culturally when grunge/alternative music emerged onto the scene. “The guitar-drenched sounds, distortion, strong power chords, basic melodic guitar solos, and simple, but tuneful vocals” (Rubin) were attractive.
